Large general contractor seeking experienced Superintendent with 10+ years of relevant experience in construction phase of large infrastructure projects
Under the general direction of the Construction Manager, the General Superintendent will coordinate the planning and schedule activities for the construction and/or repair of heavy civil engineering works including Excavation, Haul, Fill, Stockpiling, Concrete and Formwork. The General Superintendent is responsible to support the overall Project requirements that works are safely completed on schedule and on budget in compliance with the contract requirements. All work must be performed safely, efficiently and completed to the highest standards of quality and workmanship
Required positive interaction and productive working relationships with other supervisory staff, office and technical staff, Ministry of Transportation personnel, emergency personnel and the travelling public.
The Superintendent is the direct Supervisor for positions such as Laborer’s, Equipment Operators and Foremen and is also responsible for the co-ordination and direction of the workforce in the performance of their duties. The successful candidate must have a thorough understanding of maintenance and safety standards, the ability to provide effective leadership, and the ability to ensure that all work is carried out in a safe and cost-effective manner to meet or exceed standards.
Core Responsibilities
Establish a thorough knowledge of plans and specifications, work schedules, production targets and procedures pertaining to changes, extra work, and claims and costing
Manage construction activities on-site in order to maintain targeted/scheduled production within budget
Organize, direct, supervise and control the work activities within the Management area and ensure that staff, equipment and materials are available and deployed in a manner that achieves cost effectiveness and quality
Assist with recruiting, training, and developing supervisors, professionals, workers and support staff.
Communicate with field supervision and have strong field presence to become included in all site
Field contract administration of subcontracts including confirmation of payment
Conducting time studies of production by crews and
Provide process planning and project management services for
Provide technical direction to suppliers and support
Diagnose and correct deficiencies in construction and
Be a safety leader and endorse the “Zero Incident Philosophy”.
Be visible out in the field, ensuring compliance with the safety site specific procedures and always encouraging safe behavior.
Provide oversight and leadership, ensuring all necessary safety procedures are in place.
Before assigning work, recognize hazards and communicate expectations to the team to mitigate or remove
Participate and attend Safety meetings and communicate down to the team where needed.
Plan safety into all work activities and effectively communicate these down the chain of command.
Constantly monitor work behaviors and correct all unsafe acts
Provide clear housekeeping requirements before, during and after all
Verify and enforce compliance with all safety procedures and protocols
Special Conditions:
Individuals may be required to travel within Canada and elsewhere as directed.
Positions, hence individuals, may be subject to relocation to projects and offices within Canada and elsewhere according to company resource requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Civil construction and an in depth knowledge of the road and bridge maintenance industry
Delegate and monitor work and provide constructive feedback.
Able to oversee timely and fair punch list completion, resolve all “routine” change orders, timely delivery through close out submittals, leaving the customer with a positive view of Company.
Good operational planning and time management skills; able to manage projects simultaneously without compromising on standards and quality.
Ability to ensure standards and specifications are met.
Ability to work with colleagues to deliver project and operational performance
Strong understanding on highway maintenance in general and British Columbia highway maintenance specifications
Experience/Qualifications
Technical Diploma, Trade Certification and/or equivalent training or experience.
5 years’ experience in a supervisory position.
Previous experience on heavy civil construction projects, mass concrete experience will be considered an asset.
Work on high profile and complex projects
Ability to self perform roadwork and utility installation
Advanced knowledge of construction technology, methods, equipment, tools, procedures, scheduling and cost control.
Knowledge of contingency planning.
Knows how to interpret contract documents to mitigate risk and plan work effectively.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
