For more information, see: Interpretation Officer/Coordinator is responsible for planning interpretation program research and development, delivering interpretation programs to provide visitors of Nahanni National Park Reserve with interpretive guided hikes and evening campfire programs, and building relationships with Indigenous communities. Most programming will be delivered in the Nahanni Nation Park Reserve and to the residents of Fort Simpson and Nahanni Butte, with non-personal products developed for virtual visitors and visitors unable to reach the communities. There is potential to work on a variety of projects which could include writing, photography, filmmaking and graphic design components.

The Interpretation Officer/Coordinator supervises and trains interpretation staff (2-3), students (3-4) and community volunteers. They will work with our Dehcho Dene and Nahʔą Dehé Dene partners, the parks cooperative management committee, tourism operators and various territorial and municipal departments. The Interpretation Officer/Coordinator also works with partners to support capacity building for Dehcho Dene and Nahʔą Dehé Dene members interested in working for Parks Canada.

This position manages a budget, coordinates programs and training with the local communities and with Nahanni National Park Reserve, and may coordinate the complex logistics of backcountry travel in a fly-in park.

Work environment

Nahʔą Dehé is managed by way of the Ndahecho Gondié Gháádé Agreement, which is a renewed shared governance model between Parks Canada and the Nahʔą Dehé and Dehcho Dene. This new Agreement builds on 20 years of cooperative management and this relationship is a practical example of a shared approach for making gains in Reconciliation and Nation-to-Nation relationships.

Annual average visitation in Nahʔą Dehé is approximately visitors. Visitors access the park by float plane and will rock climb in the Cirque of the Unclimbables, or paddle the rivers including the South Nahanni River a Canadian Heritage River, or make a day-flight seeing tour with local air charter companies. Park staff rotate on shifts in-residence at remote fly-in locations in the park where they will provide orientation, safety information, and interpretative programs for visitors. We provide a high standard of care and service to visitors who are on their once-in-a-lifetime trip to a UNESCO World Heritage Site and world-renowned wilderness park.

The Interpretation Officer/Coordinator will reside in Fort Simpson and will spend some time in Nahanni Butte and Náátsįhchoh/Nahanni National Park Reserve Complex. The Interpretation and Officer/Coordinator needs to be comfortable spending extended periods of time in the backcountry and travelling in small aircraft (float planes and helicopters). The successful candidate must be willing to work shift work including working on holidays, evenings, and weekends. Shifts may include one or more multi-day trips into Nahanni and/or Náátsįhchoh.

EDUCATION
A minimum of 2 years post-secondary education or acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to position.

EXPERIENCE
Experience in planning, delivering, and evaluating interpretive or education programs and/ or products for a wide range of audiences using a variety of presentation techniques;
Experience in leading teams;
Experience managing projects and/or events; and
Experience in working with stakeholders and partners committees, cooperating associations, teachers, school board, communities and Indigenous groups).

Knowledge of personal and non-personal interpretive theory, techniques, planning and evaluation;
Knowledge of natural and cultural heritage specific to Nahanni National Park Reserve; and
Knowledge of theories and best practices for working in cross cultural environments and
Indigenous communities.

As outlined in the Ndahecho Gondié Gháádé Agreement, Parks Canada will give special consideration to
Knowledge of Nahʔą Dehé Dene and Dehcho Dene culture, communities, society and economy;
Knowledge of the cooperative management arrangements for the Park; and
Knowledge of the environmental characteristics of the Park and its surrounding area.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The position requires the incumbent to:
Work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and territorial holidays;
Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy;
Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
Stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods;
Work from various locations; and
Travel extensively (including overnight, off site).
