TheManaging Director – Sustainability and Climate Advisory( internal title: Senior Principal ) plays a critical role in enriching and expanding the services Montrose brings to its clients. Given the pressures today’s companies are facing to proactively understand and address their ESG risks, opportunities, and impacts, this role will work in partnership with the VP, Sustainability and Climate Advisory to develop, sell, and deliver sustainability and climate solutions to our clients.
This role will have a strong focus on business development, service development, and team capacity building, along with elements of client management and people management. You’ll regularly interact directly with clients and will be part of a strong team of committed environmental sustainability professionals. Though you may manage individual projects, your role will focus more on coaching and empowering other team members to deliver successful projects. You’ll need at least 12 years of directly relevant experience, preferably insustainability/climateconsulting for industrial clients (e.g., oil and gas, chemical, power, and/or manufacturing sectors).

A DAY IN THE LIFE
This role will work closely with the VP, Sustainability and Climate Advisory in leading the Sustainability and Climate Advisory team. This role will be responsible for a full range of activities including:
Nurturing new client relationships (and ideally, existing client relationships from previous roles) to develop and secure new business opportunities – driving sales and revenue growth.
Establishing a business development culture and work processes for the business line, including but not limited to:Coaching and mentoring staff in business development best practices
Monitoring progress towards business line and individual business development goals
Promoting effective and routine use of CRM
Identifying and attending key events for sponsorship, speaking opportunities, and brand exposure
Working with Marketing to establish focused campaigns and supporting materialsAssisting with the development and implementation of work processes to enable the business line to achieve goals and objectives.
Supporting service development, as Montrose continually expands and matures its services under the Sustainability and Climate Advisory business line. This will include:Services to support clients along their sustainability journey, from early stages (e.g., double materiality assessments, benchmarking, stakeholder engagement) through to goal setting, action planning for goal achievement, and sustainabilityreporting/disclosures/ratersand rankers. Includes supporting clients responding to sustainability/ESG regulations such as EU’s CSRD.
Services with a focus on identifying and managing climate impact and climate risk, including the development of Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG inventories, lifecycle assessments (LCAs), setting long-term (net zero) and near-term science-based targets, developing credible Climate Transition Plans, supporting clients with implementation of TCFD recommendations/IFRS S2. Includes supporting clients responding to climate-related regulations such as CA SB253/SB261 and the pending SEC climate rule.Providing coaching and training to team members and others to support service delivery.
Collaborating with other Montrose Lines of Business (LOBs) to identify cross-selling opportunities for well-rounded revenue streams.
Assisting the VP in creating annual strategy, budget, and hiring plan.
Keeping up to date and knowledgeable on industry climate and sustainability trends, frameworks, standards, and regulations.
Exercising safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including participation in required safety training programs.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty responsibly and satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, sustainability, or an environmental science discipline.
12+ years of progressively responsible experience inenvironmental/sustainabilityconsulting, with demonstrated business development and project management/executionresponsibilities.Preference is given to candidates who have worked directly with oil & gas, manufacturing, and chemical sector clients. (Note: consulting experience is a must for this role; in-house experience only will not be sufficient.)Experience must include developing, providing, and overseeing services supporting industrial clients on their sustainability and climate priorities. This may include sustainability strategy and governance, materiality assessments, goal and target setting, policy and program development, sustainability reporting, sustainability raters and rankers, GHG emissions inventories science-based target setting, decarbonization planning, climate risk identification and assessment, GHG/climate reporting, etc.
Demonstrated experience with double materiality assessments and CSRD is preferred.Demonstrated ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels ofpersonnel/management,both internally and externally.
Effective and efficient project management skills, including experience developing project proposals/budgets.
Ability to work effectively independently as well as in teams (in particular, in a remote working environment).
Natural leader: enthusiastic and motivated self-starter, with willingness to pitch in for the benefit of the team and the company.
Strong business acumen (knowledge and skill).
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work with agility across those responsibilities.
Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
Excellent writing and presentation skills; effective communicator, comfortable engaging with client at all levels of the business.
Ability and willingness to travel periodically (typically no more than once every 1-2 months).
