Laurentian University is located on the traditional lands of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, in proximity to the Wahnapitae First Nation, within the territory of the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850 in Sudbury, Ontario. Laurentian serves over 8000 students and is one of two bilingual universities in the province of Ontario. Committed to its bilingual and tri-cultural mandate, Laurentian University offers an experience in English and French with a comprehensive approach to Indigenous education. Laurentian’s beautiful, forested campus is surrounded by fresh-water lakes, conservation lands and hundreds of kilometres of cross-country and hiking trails while situated in the geographic centre of Greater Sudbury, northern Ontario’s major urban centre (population 170,000). Laurentian University has close and productive ties to Science North, the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Lab (SNOLAB), Health Sciences North, and multiple post-secondary institutions.

The Dean of the Faculty of Education and Health will play a key role in executing Laurentian University’s operational transformation plan, and the development and implementation of its next Strategic Plan which will support and guide future growth of the Faculty and institution. The Dean provides leadership in advancing academic and research excellence within the Faculty and supporting the University’s Research and Academic plans.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President Academic, the Dean will foster strong relationships with faculty members and Directors and will work collaboratively with stakeholder groups including governance bodies, accreditation bodies, fellow Deans, senior administration, student associations, unions, and external partners. In collaboration with the Advancement Office, the Dean will actively engage with alumni and friends of the University to help raise funds to support priority initiatives for the Faculty and University.

The ideal candidate will be a forward looking, dynamic leader with a strong research profile, a commitment to teaching excellence, student success, and experience in budget management and resource allocation to support institutional and Faculty goals. They will lead and unify the Faculty with a vision and administrative focus and support excellence in education, research and innovation. They will have experience with fostering a culture of respect and collegiality. They will have knowledge of and may have experience working in northern communities, with Indigenous communities, and with Francophone communities in a minority setting. They will have a Ph.D in a relevant discipline, a proven record of leadership and extensive academic administrative experience with particular emphasis on academic planning, curriculum development, the student experience, and faculty development. The position requires excellent communication skills in English and French. Knowledge and recognition of the importance of integrating the Anishinaabe language is an asset.

The Faculty of Education and Health includes the following Schools: School of Education, School of Indigenous Relations, School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences, School of Nursing, École d'Orthophonie, and the School of Social Work contributing to its strong interdisciplinary and interprofessional focus. The Faculty is one of Laurentian’s largest, with 36 programs at undergraduate and graduate levels, 75 faculty members (including tenure track/tenured faculty and limited term appointments), 22 staff and over 3,100 undergraduate and graduate students. The Faculty is affiliated with several research centres including the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH), Centre for Rural and Northern Health (CRaNHR), Evaluating Children’s Health Outcomes Research Centre (ECHO), Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute and others.

Le doyen ou la doyenne de la Faculté d’éducation et de santé jouera un rôle clé dans la mise en oeuvre du plan de transformation opérationnelle de l’Université Laurentienne ainsi que dans l’élaboration et la mise en oeuvre de son prochain plan stratégique qui orientera et appuiera la croissance future de la Faculté et de l’établissement. Il ou elle fera preuve de leadership en privilégiant l’excellence des études et de la recherche dans la Faculté et soutenant le plan d’enseignement et le plan stratégique de recherche de l’Université. Il ou elle relèvera de la vice-rectrice aux études, cultivera des relations solides avec le corps professoral et les directeurs et collaborera avec des groupes d’intervenants dont les instances de gouvernance, les organismes d’agrément, les autres doyens, les cadres dirigeants, les associations étudiantes, les syndicats et les partenaires externes. En collaboration avec le Bureau de l’avancement, le doyen ou la doyenne jouera un rôle actif auprès des anciens et amis de la Laurentienne pour aider à mobiliser des fonds à l’appui d’initiatives prioritaires de la Faculté et de l’Université.

La personne idéale sera une ou un leader dynamique tourné vers l’avenir, avec un solide profil de recherche, un engagement envers l’excellence de l’enseignement et la réussite étudiante ainsi qu’une expérience en matière de gestion de budget et d’affectation de ressources pour appuyer les objectifs de l’Université et de la Faculté. Elle dirigera et unifiera la Faculté en faisant preuve de vision et de sens de l’administration tout en appuyant l’excellence en enseignement, recherche et innovation. Elle aura également acquis une expérience en matière de promotion d’une culture de respect et de collégialité, ainsi que des connaissances, peut-être aussi de l’expérience de travail, auprès de communautés du nord, de collectivités autochtones et de communautés francophones en milieu minoritaire. La personne choisie devra être titulaire d’un doctorat dans une discipline pertinente, avoir des antécédents avérés de leadership et posséder une vaste expérience de l’administration universitaire, en particulier dans les domaines de la planification des études, de l’élaboration de programmes d’études, de l’expérience des étudiants et du perfectionnement du corps professoral. En outre, le poste exige d’excellentes aptitudes à la communication et la capacité de communiquer couramment en anglais comme en français. La connaissance de la langue anishinaabe ou la reconnaissance de l’importance d’intégrer cette langue sera considérée comme un atout.

La Faculté d’éducation et de santé héberge les écoles suivantes qui favorisent un accent interdisciplinaire et interprofessionnel : École d’éducation, École des relations autochtones, École de kinésiologie et des sciences de la santé, École des sciences infirmières, École d’orthophonie et École de service social. La Faculté est l’une des plus grandes à la Laurentienne avec 36 programmes de premier cycle et des cycles supérieurs, 75 membres du corps professoral (y compris les postes permanents, menant à la permanence et à durée limitée), 22 membres du personnel et quelque 3100 étudiants à tous les cycles.
