The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s largest mental health teaching hospital and one of the world’s leading research centres in its field. With a dedicated staff of more than 3,000 physicians, clinicians, researchers, educators and support staff, CAMH offers outstanding clinical care to more than 34,000 patients each year. CAMH Foundation is charged with raising and stewarding funds in support of CAMH. Its role is to help transform the way we understand and address mental illness by raising awareness and increasing engagement across the country. Generous and dedicated supporters help CAMH advance discovery and innovation, build spaces that promote recovery, and break down the stigma of mental illness.
The Philanthropy Team is responsible for inspiring philanthropic support from individuals in the private sector, making up over 70% of CAMH Foundation’s annual revenue. THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Director, Principal Gifts is a senior fundraiser responsible for proactively managing an active pipeline of 50-75 donors and prospects in all stages of the development cycle, with an annual goal of $5M, confirmed in consultation with senior leadership. Working closely with senior volunteers and hospital staff, the Philanthropy team and colleagues across the Foundation, the Director, Principal Gifts develops and implements cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies that provide prospective donors with meaningful opportunities to impact the cause of mental health at CAMH.
The Director, Principal Gifts, is a leader on the Philanthropy team, responsible for inspiring and coaching at least two direct reports (more junior fundraisers), and driving revenue growth for donors giving at the $25K to $5M+ levels. A member of the Foundation’s Senior Leadership Team, the successful candidate will contribute to and implement annual and long-term strategies that drive stronger revenue development among diverse communities and enhance values-driven workplace culture at CAMH Foundation. The Director, Principal Gifts contributes through both fundraising and team leadership to the ambitious goals of CAMH and our mission to improve care, teaching and research for mental illness and addictions, so that no one is left behind.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the development and execution of principal gift commitments, focusing on gifts of $1M+ and an annual goal of $5M, aligned with Foundation priorities.
Develop an understanding of the educational, research, clinical and financial needs and goals of CAMH.
Develop and implement strategies that engage, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of foundations and individual prospective donors.
Engage and collaborate with senior staff and volunteers in transformational gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities.
Ensure compelling and strategic fundraising materials, including briefing notes, proposals, and stewardship reports, are prepared as required.
Engage regularly with CAMH leadership, physicians, researchers, and other staff to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward transformational gift donors. Actively engage hospital partners in the shaping visionary proposals and solicitation of donors.
Develop proposals and gift agreements, including budgets and milestones, with appropriate approvals to realize a prospective donor's philanthropic goals and fulfill priorities within the CAMH mission.
Lead the Foundation's fundraising efforts for identified priority areas to contribute to CAMH’s progress in mental health care, teaching and research.
Work with the President and CEO and Chief Philanthropy Officer in development and execution of transformational principal gifts strategies for donors approved through the clearance process.
Manage an active pipeline of 50-75 prospects (identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship), using a focused and accountable approach of donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
Liaise with allied CAMH Foundation teams including Brand and Donor Engagement, Legacy Giving, Corporate and Community Partnerships, Signature Events, and Personalized Stewardship to ensure that fundraising is coordinated with their initiatives.
Liaise with Impact Communications team to develop proposals and stewardship reports.
Liaise with Research & Prospect Management team to identify/qualify prospects that are appropriate matches for CAMH priority needs.
Working with Operations staff, document and share activity reports as required.
Ensure accurate, professional and current Raiser's Edge and hard-copy records, actions, and reports are maintained for donors and prospective donors under management.
Cultivate strong professional relationships with CAMH hospital staff.
Stewardship Activities
Contribute to the development of strategies for effective stewardship of major donors and work closely with the Personalized Stewardship team and others to execute these strategies.
Collaborate with Foundation partners to establish and deliver appropriate stewardship plans, ensuring gifts are handled and recognized according to Foundation policies and practices.
Ensure appropriate development of high-quality materials, proposals, cases for support, letters, reports and acknowledgements for cultivation and stewardship of donors.
Work with Gift Processing team to ensure that acknowledgements, tax receipts, invitations, and other correspondence are sent in a timely manner.
Work with senior management to identify and recruit volunteer leaders.
Supervise, coordinate and effectively engage volunteers in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors.
Liaise with assigned groups and committees, if/as applicable, to provide guidance and leadership.
Planning & Communication
Assist in the preparation of an annual Operating Plan, with measurable goals and strategies (including precise and practical deadlines), to maximize principal gifts to the organization.
Contribute to the development and execution of strategies to support the Foundation’s fundraising, campaign and annual goals.
Working with Operations staff, report on fundraising activities including Philanthropy team fundraising activity (revenue, donor calls, engagement interactions), to ensure appropriate actions are recorded in the Foundation's Raiser's Edge database.
Work with colleagues to plan and execute proposals, and targeted communications for current and potential principal gift donors.
Leadership Responsibilities
Actively manage and coach two or more junior fundraisers plus support staff to drive revenue and donor activity to support identified priorities for CAMH; work with direct reports to achieve annual professional development plans.
Set, measure progress and contribute to the achievement of Philanthropy team strategy and revenue goals.
Clearly communicate expectations and performance metrics to direct reports and hold regular check-ins to support progress towards annual goals.
Lead team-wide Prospect Management and Priority Fundraising strategies.
Manage the agenda and content for Philanthropy team meetings, in partnership with fellow members of the Philanthropy Senior Management Team.
Serve as an active, engaged participant on the CAMH Foundation Senior Leadership Team, contributing to the achievement of Foundation-wide goals.
Commit to ongoing, active learning in fundraising, leadership and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion best practices.
Other
Serve as a resource to the Philanthropy team on effective transformational gifts and major gift fundraising practice.
Work as a team player promoting a positive and professional work environment and conduct role with integrity and respect.
Act as an ambassador throughout the community, positively representing the Hospital and the Foundation.
Abide by the policies and procedures of CAMH and CAMHF.
Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and work in a manner that is safe, reporting incidents immediately to direct supervisor.
Perform other duties as assigned in order to meet the overall goals and objectives of the Foundation.

A post-secondary education and a minimum of ten years of fundraising experience preferably in a large, complex not- for-profit organization such as a hospital or university.
Experience in a large, complex, multidisciplinary academic environment preferred.
Ability to engage new communities or affinity groups with culturally competent strategies.
Commitment to ongoing professional development; a CFRE designation is encouraged.
Demonstrated experience closing gifts of six and seven figures and above.
Extremely effective interpersonal skills with a professional presence and manner, and capable of exercising independent judgment, initiative and flexibility.
Demonstrated ability to think strategically, work proactively and cross-functionally, and manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
Excellent organization, planning and time management skills with exacting attention to detail.
Superb critical and analytical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) including the ability to understand and effectively convey key aspects of complex subjects.
Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office software applications and demonstrated knowledge of Raiser's Edge or equivalent.
A flexible team player able to collaborate with and inspire junior colleagues, peers and senior volunteers and leaders.
Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
Extensive knowledge of Canada's philanthropic laws and charitable giving instruments, tax laws and related tools to enable transformational giving.
