Important financial information:

As a Conservation and Protection, Detachment Supervisor performing the duties of a Fishery Officer, you will receive an additional allowance of $6, annually per the current collective agreement.

Additional funding is provide to staff members located in Isolated Posts (Yellowknife and Iqaluit) and can range anywhere from $16, to $52, annually which is based on if the employee has dependants or is occupying staff housing.

Vacation Travel Assistance MAY be provided twice a year for each eligible member of the household.

Successful candidates may be eligible for the reimbursement of relocation costs.

Or by email to and leadership of a detachment, in the area of responsibility, which performs enforcement operations and promotes education and stewardship activities to ensure the conservation and protection (C&P) of fishery resources and fish habitats for Canadians, in partnership with Indigenous communities and other internal, domestic and international stakeholders.

This position has peace officer powers and protections for the purpose of enforcing the legislation under which the officer is designated.

You will provide advice and support to Fishery Officers on investigations and may lead or coordinate more complex investigations. You will build relationships with a range of internal, external and co-management partners. Your work and leadership will be key to helping ensure the Conservation & Protection objectives.

Manage a professional workforce, assign budget and material resources with prudence and probity in accordance with government policy and regulations.

Recommend and implement enforcement priorities based on consultations with staff, regional and area management personnel, and various client groups.

Determine the Detachment's resource requirements (human, financial, equipment) and make recommendations to the Chief to obtain the resource requirements needed to safely and cost-effectively deliver enforcement operations.

Plan, organize and direct the activities of the Conservation and Protection program personnel for the assigned Detachment.

Plan, manage, direct and participate in enforcement operations and the response to crisis situations requiring the deployment of resources between Detachments; provide negotiation and consultation expertise to the parties in dispute and assist in enforcement and investigative services.

Oversee the collection and validation of enforcement data related to conservation and protection activities and apply established standards to measure program effectiveness.

Promote stewardship of the fisheries resources and fish habitat among the various user groups, private and public sector industries, government agencies, and the general public. Promote responsible fishing and develops community relationships to support and encourage a strong conservation ethic.

Coordinate program delivery with other provincial, national or international enforcement agencies including the sharing of intelligence.

Serve as on-site manager of a Government of Canada Building / Office Lease.

Become a member of a dynamic and evolving Department and help to keep Canadas waters safe and secure. Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard employ over 10, talented and dedicated employees in over locations across Canada.

The Arctic Region is extremely diverse, covering two Territories (Nunavut and Northwest Territories.
Located in a true Arctic environment at the northern end of Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island, Iqaluit has a population of approximately 10, people and is an active community with deep-rooted Inuit culture. The small city has many amenities found in larger cities in the South.
Located on the shores of Great Slave Lake and the edge of the Arctic, Yellowknife is a true northern town with a population of approximately 20, people. Yellowknife has a small town feel, with all the modern amenities found in much larger cities. Yellowknife is a family oriented community with easy access to outdoor adventures.

If you are interested in conducting patrols across the Arctic, exploring this vast, beautiful and remote region of Canada by boat, aircraft or snowmobile and seeing beautiful landscapes that few people ever get to witness, while ensuring the protection of Canadas Oceans and aquatic resources, then these positions are for you.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one position in Iqaluit, NU, on an indeterminate basis. This position is located in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Please only apply if you are located in Nunavut or plan on relocating to Nunavut.

The position in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories is Anticipatory.

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions with varying tenures and locations within the Arctic Region within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. A Secondary School diploma OR employer approved alternative with related equivalent experience. *

The manager may accept a combination of education, training and/or experience in a related field as an alternative to the education stated above.

Successful completion of the Fishery Officer Career Progression Program (FOCPP) or an accredited Law Enforcement Training Program.**

**Law Enforcement Program examples include, but not limited to, Provincial Conservation Officers, Territorial Wildlife Officers, Canadian Wildlife Service (Enforcement), RCMP, Provincial or Municipal Police.

Experience working with Arctic-related files
Experience in planning and conducting enforcement activities.
Experience in the development and implementation of a compliance plan or project.
Experience in synthesizing information, presenting analysis, generating reports and providing recommendations to senior management*.
Experience in developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal partners and/or external stakeholders including Indigenous, Federal and/or Territorial Organization.
Experience in supervision.**
*Senior management is usually defined as the Director level and above or executives in private or public sector organizations external to the Federal Public Service.
**Supervision is usually defined as having supervised staff in an organizational unit assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, coordinating staff training and developing staffing plans).

Two year post-secondary educational program in a related field.

Experience in a natural resource management regulatory program.
Experience in major case management and prosecution, leading criminal, intelligence, or regulatory investigations.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice;
Ability and willingness to work evening and weekends;
Deployment to any part of the country, or assignment to all types of enforcement activities such as inland, coastal and offshore patrols (including air patrols), and/or forensic investigations and/or special operations;
Meet medical and psychological suitability standards;
Possession of a valid driver's license, a current standard First Aid Certificate and a CPR Certificate;
Carry and use firearms and other restricted and prohibited weapons meeting DFO proficiency standards;
Meet the DFO use of force proficiency standards;
Wear a uniform and required protective clothing;
Work and/or travel at sea or by air and in a variety of terrains and degrees of isolation for various periods of time in all weather conditions.
Travel (up to three weeks for special assignments).
Work in an isolated posting.
