Duties

Parks Canada is looking to staff seventeen positions within the Aquatic Invasive Species Programs at Lake Louise, AB and Waterton Lakes National Park, AB. Aquatic invasive species are a threat to the environment and recreational activities. By working with the Aquatic Invasive Species Program, you will help protect our parks and the surrounding areas from threats like whirling disease, quagga mussels, zebra mussels, and many others.
Successful applicants will support the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Programs in each field unit, including but not limited to, carrying out inspections and decontaminations at watercraft inspection stations, maintaining the self-certification permit program, travelling throughout the parks to check AIS regulation compliance, educating visitors on regulations and best practices, and conducting some monitoring for aquatic invasive species. These positions require driving 4x4 trucks with trailers for long distances on highways and varied terrain, operating small engine equipment and high-pressure washers, working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time and lifting heavy equipment.

DUTIES:
These positions will support the Aquatic Invasive Species Program through the watercraft inspection and self-certification programs, collecting information from visitors and using education to share the importance of AIS cleaning protocols intended to keep our aquatic ecosystems healthy.
Carry out inspections on non-motorized watercraft (canoe, kayak, etc.)
Educate visitors on regulations and proper cleaning protocols
Collect and record data
Organize and compile data, while referring issues to Supervisor
Assist with equipment inventories and maintenance logs
Work with supervisor to identify and solve problems
Prepare, set-up, calibrate, operate, and maintain equipment related to the inspection station
Participate in monitoring activities for aquatic invasive species
Foster an awareness among visitors of the importance of healthy aquatic ecosystems and the human connection to nature

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill multiple term positions, of 4 - 6 months duration, between April and November and may be used in the future to fill permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise at the Resource Management Technician, EG 01 group and level in the Lake Louise, Yoho & Kootenay Field Unit and Waterton Lakes Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, such as: Indeterminate, Term, Acting Assignment or Assignment at level, depending on status of the selected candidate.

EDUCATION
A secondary school diploma or approved alternatives or acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the position.

EXPERIENCE
Experience in travelling or working in the field

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Aquatic Invasive Species
Knowledge of Aquatic Invasive Species prevention techniques

ABILITIES
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of terrain and weather conditions
Ability to conduct watercraft inspections including collecting and recording data in appropriate formats.
Ability to follow procedures and protocols, and to report on issues
Ability to engage with park visitors on educational aspects of the Aquatic Invasive Species Program
Ability to identify hazardous or potentially hazardous situations and to take appropriate action to maintain a safe environment for self and others

ASSET EDUCATION
Post-secondary education in biological sciences, enforcement, or communication.

ASSET EXPERIENCE
AE1 Experience in handling, setting up and using fieldwork equipment, and following safety protocols, including wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
AE2 Experience delivering education programs to the public
AE3 Experience driving large trucks and towing and reversing trailers in challenging environments such as high-traffic areas
AE4 - Experience operating and maintaining small engine equipment, pumps or pressure washing systems

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial holidays, when required.
