This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.This role is expected to work full time hours (35 hours / week) and flexibility in working schedule is possible. The work will be conducted under the joint supervision of Principal Investigators, Dr. Peter Facchini and Dr. Sam Yeaman. The research is part of an Alberta Innovates grant to study and develop genomic resources in target medicinal plants of interest.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities(job functions include but are not limited to):TechnicalProduce combined Hi-C + pacbio genome assembly for Catharanthus roseusProduce combined Hi-C + pacbio genome assembly for Iboga (provided tissue can be obtained by the PI’s)Produce Illumina-based assembly for ephedraCollaborate with colleagues at Willow Biosciences to improve the Cannabis sativa Hi-C + pacbio assemblyConduct comparative genomics and RNAseq as determined in collaboration with the PIs and their labsAssist other lab members with projectsAttend weekly lab meetingsAdministrativeWork collaboratively and independently, as defined by Principal Investigators, on laboratory experiments, data analysis, and data interpretationInteract with other members of the team and provide technical support and offer advice on technical lab issues as neededReporting and PublicationsAssist with the publishing of Scientific papers on the work completedQualifications / Requirements:Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related field is requiredPhD in Biology is an asset1-3 years experience with genomics and bioinformatics is requiredExperience with constructing genome assemblies is required, ideally with pacbio and Hi-C dataExperience with analysis and annotation of genomes, RNAseq analysis, and comparative genomics is an assetExperience with the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publicationStrong communication skills and team work capabilities, while also being able to work independentlyApplication Deadline:April 1, 2020We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes.
