This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 7 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.Reporting to the Principal Investigator.The PIOU Research Nurse will be the point of connection between study participants and the research team in a study called Optimizing the Management of Pain and Irritability in Children with Severe Neurological Impairments or the PIUO study (PIUO = Pain and Irritability of Unknown Origin). This is a recurring part time position with variable hours.  Recurring part time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  Flexible hours may at times be required to ensure that study activities can be accomplished (for example, some evenings and weekend hours may be required) Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities(job functions include but are not limited to):Perform daily activities of the research study, including telephone calls with parents/patientsAssess the eligibility of participants and complete the appropriate consent forms with familiesClearly explain, using layman’s terms, the purpose of the study and what the study procedure will involve to parentsAdminister questionnaires related to experiences of pain, family quality of life and parental stressReview and audit charts of study participants for treatments related to pain and irritabilityCross-check medical information from charts during baseline interview with study participantsEnter data into the REDCap database during or post baseline interview and from telephone follow-up interviews with participantsCollaborate with research staff (Research Coordinator, Data Manager, Statistician, Site Leads, Principal Investigators) to discuss research design, methods of improvement, and strategies for executionDemonstrate genuine concern for and interest in the participants as well as provide for their welfare, safety, and comfortMaintain research documents for tracking participants and study activitiesMonitor, assess, document and report to the Site Lead, Principal Investigator and research team regarding:Participant response and compliance with the protocol as well as any on-going progressStudy activity complications and concerns regarding any possible adverse eventsTrends of importance in the research data or noticeable findingsReview protocols and provide input on resources being impacted and any patient care issuesExtract clinical information from clinic or hospital charts and ensure the data set for patient information is complete and accurateMaintain accurate completion of study data with timely submission of data capture formsPlan, prepare and participate in external audits and monitoringAttend research team meetings as required by the Principal InvestigatorLiaise with the health care team and other research personnel both on-site and outside the institution for project management and information exchange regarding assigned studiesQualifications / Requirements:Registered Nurse with CARNABachelor’s degree requiredMinimum of one year experienceExperience in research, paediatric pain and/or caring for children with neurological impairments is preferredEffective communication, interviewing and counselling skills are requiredAbility to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlinesAbility to exercise initiative and maintain confidentialityEffective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are a must, as well as a high degree of motivation, enthusiasm and initiativeAbility to work effectively with a wide variety of patients and their families who are undergoing stressful life experiencesExcellent interviewing and interpersonal skillsDemonstrated technical dexterity, knowledge and skill working with computer technology is requiredStrong leadership, communication and decision making skills – requiredDemonstrated strong organizational and interpersonal skills – requiredDemonstrated superior physical and emotional assessment skills – requiredApplication Deadline: February 26, 2020We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes.
