Scope of Position

The position’s central mandate is to provide expertise, assistance and leadership to targeted Paralympic summer and winter sports in the ongoing implementation and assessment of an integrated sport science and medicine program. With this knowledge, the position will also play a critical role in the planning, preparation and implementation of a Performance Sciences plan at the Parapan and Paralympic Games.

In addition, the individual will provide guidance to Para Sport NSOs regarding the development of summer and winter sport applied research projects and engage in monitoring of targeted projects. The position will report to the Director of Paralympic Performance and Pathway (CPC) and the OTP Lead Advisor, Performance Sciences, Research and Innovation, and will work collaboratively with the OTP Directors of Summer and Winter Sport, OTP Director of performance Sciences, Research and Innovation, OTP High Performance Advisors (HPA’s), CPC Paralympic Performance Advisors, CSI/CSC’s, COC, Major Games Canada (MGC) and technology and research specialists.

  • Roles and Responsibilities:

    SPORT ADVISING

  • Work in collaboration with OTP High Performance Advisors (HPA’s) staff to ensure that the targeted Summer and Winter Paralympic sports have an optimal integrated PSRI
  • Work in collaboration with the Directors of Summer and Winter Sport and the HPA’s on selected individual sport plans for enhanced PSRI-specific advisory work including on-site mentorship, assessments, recommendations and
  • Work in collaboration with Canadian Sport Institutes/Centers to assist targeted Parasport NSO’s to receive quality services based on solid IST plans, and to facilitate service agreements and enhanced relationships between NSO’s and CSI/CSCs.
  • Provide expertise and mentoring to targeted Parasport NSOs and selected practitioners in the area of performance sciences, research and innovation, and the planning and periodization of training.
  • Participate on NSO and CSI hiring committees of potential sport scientists as requested.
  • GAMES PREPARATION AND DELIVERY

  • Work in collaboration with relevant CPC departments to lead optimal delivery of Performance Science needs in a Games time
  • Assess Summer and Winter Paralympic sport requirements in order to develop appropriate Performance Science plans.
  • Work in collaboration with Major Games Canada as well as the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) to lead Performance science items for Major Games and to ensure an optimal environment for the Parapan and Paralympic
  • Liaise with the Chief Medical Officer to ensure alignment between Performance Sciences and Health Sciences plans.
  • Lead and develop Sport Science guidelines for Paralympic Winter and Summer Games’ preparation.
  • Lead performance sciences implementation at Major Games in a Support Staff capacity
  • Participate in CPC Staff meeting, strategy and budget meetings and other internal meetings related to the sport department.
  • Provide expertise, when required, to support CPC initiatives such as engaging with a potential new sponsor related to Performance Sciences.
  • Participate in international conferences and meetings as required to be up to speed with international trends and developments.
  • PRACTITIONER & SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

  • With the OTP Lead Advisor PSRI, design strategies within the system to support, develop and retain sport scientists with para sport specific skills in
  • With the OTP Lead Advisor PSRI, advance para sport professional development opportunities for sport scientists in Canada within the Sport Scientist Canada framework
  • As a member of the HPAC (High Performance Advisory Council-Pathway), Chair the Para Sport Practitioner Development Working Group and provide an overall vision, along with oversight and leadership for specific projects that pertain to national policies, guidelines, and educational materials in Para
  • Contribute as a member in the HPAC – Sciences providing para sport perspective across scientific discipline outcomes.
  • Qualifications and Experience:

  • University graduate degree in a sport science
  • Extensive applied experience (5-8 years) and success in performance sciences, research and innovation programming including 4 years in a project leadership role within the Canadian or international sport
  • Previous experience working at a multi-sport organization is an
  • Previous experience and demonstrated passion for working in the para-sport high performance environment.
  • Significant successful experience in the design and implementation of Performance Sciences services to high performance athletes in preparation for, or at a major games.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of the MS Office Suite is
  • Strong data management skills.
