Globally recognized conservation organization seeks an animal care professional looking for meaningful work that impacts wildlife and wild spaces by leading the team at our Wildlife Conservation Centre as they work to change the trajectory of the animals, plants, and people on our planet. Our Mission | Take and inspire action to sustain wildlife and wild places Our Values | Effective collaboration and communication, honesty and integrity, customer focus, safety, and conservation The Manager, Animal Care – Conservation Centre provides on site management, cooperative leadership, and animal care services at the Calgary Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Centre. What you will do:
Organize staff scheduling and assign daily tasks, ensuring resources are allocated most efficiently
Train and lead paid and unpaid animal care staff
Perform day to day animal care duties as required
Conduct tours and interviews as directed
Ensure all work areas and equipment are up to or above standards for functionality and cleanliness
Assist in coordination and implementation of special projects, minor renovations, and improvements as approved
Update animal management and husbandry protocols related to the Wildlife Conservation Centre animal care and operations, ensuring stakeholder input is represented where appropriate
Oversee animal handling events, including animal shipments
Employee performance management for the purposes of guiding and directing staff on a daily basis, addressing complaints, resolving problems, or escalating to the Senior Manager, Animal Care as appropriate
Completing cooperative performance appraisals
Liaise with veterinarians and other department representatives as required
Other projects as required
What you will bring:
BSc in Zoology, Biology, Ecology, or Equivalent is required
Associates Degree as an Animal Health Technician is an asset
Minimum 5 years working in animal care in a zoo or related facility, with progressive responsibilities
Minimum 2 years supervisory experience
Class 5 Driver’s License
Experience caring for species in the Calgary Zoo’s breed for release programs or with any breed for release program would be a strong asset
Experience leading a team in a positive work environment would be a strong asset
Working knowledge of farm equipment, tools, and small maintenance repairs would be an asset
Strong computer skills
Ability to work inside and outside year round
Working in a remote area
Ability to lift 25kg.
Expectation to work weekends, holidays, and potentially evening and on-call services
Potential opportunity to live on site
The Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
