Job ID:20079Updated:February 12, 2020Location:Main CampusPosition OverviewTheDepartment of Grounds and Roads  inFacilities  is currently seeking a Full-time  Lead Hand, Grounds and Roads .Operations and Maintenance (O&M), is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and  cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities.TheMunicipalServicesunit isresponsibleforthemaintenance oftheUniversity’soutdoor environment including year around maintenance and repair of soft/hard landscaping elements  including planted areas, lawns, irrigation, roads, sidewalks, storm sewers, and  underground  utilities.  In the winter months activities are snow and ice control on sidewalks, roadways and parking lots and for installation and maintenance of plantings within buildings. This position reports to the Municipal Services Supervisor. Work is performed under minimal supervision.Under the direction of the Supervisor, serves as crew leader for the University of Calgary’s MunicipalServicesDepartment;plansandcoordinatestheactivities ofassignedmaintenanceworkcrews/contractors; participates inmaintainingsoftandhardlandscapes,theirrigationsystem, underground utilities; provides general maintenance assistance to otherdepartments; prepares maintenance records and documentation; and performs other related duties.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities(job functions include but are not limited to):The Lead Hand assists the supervisor with staff training, work scheduling and overseeing work projects for crews of varying sizes, as well as staff and contractors engaged in soft/hard landscapemaintenance and repair activities at the Main, Spyhill, Foothills, Barrier Lake and Priddis Observatory campus supported areas. Work at this level requires a high level of expertise and thorough knowledge of recognized practices and techniques in the field of Horticulture, Environmental Management, and maintenance and repairs of soft and hard landscapes.Performs routine skilled work relating to soft and hard landscape maintenance and repairs. Duties, depending on the season, will include, as directed:Cultivating, transplanting, watering and maintaining lawns, shrubs, trees and flowers and mowing and trimming of grass using manual or powered tools and equipment.Mowing of large lawn areas using the front-deck riding mower or the side-folding reel riding mower, and performing cleaning and lubrication on assigned mowers as instructed.Hand cultivating and maintaining flower and shrub beds using hand tools.Maintenance and repairs of the irrigation system.Clearing snow from building entrances, steps, sidewalks, and patios using shovel, hand operated power equipment, mechanical broom and other motorized equipment.Spreading sand or salt by hand.Picking up paper and other rubbish and performs other general cleanup work.Picks up recycling and waste at various bin locations.Coordinating cleaning, inspections, repairs and maintenance to storm sewers/drains and underground utilities with contractors and staff.Pothole patching on road surfaces.Minor concrete or brick sidewalk/pathway repairs.Qualifications / Requirements:Qualified candidates will have a recognized Landscape Horticulture Journeyperson designation or a Horticulture Diploma or aHorticulture Degree. .Five years of relevant operational experience in the field of landscape maintenance/repairs/ construction.Three to four years of demonstrated leadership experience in the field of landscape maintenance/ repairs/construction. Other combinations of relevant horticulture experience and education might be taken into consideration.Must have considerable knowledge in the operation of equipment, tools, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in soft and hard landscape maintenance, repairs and construction.Highly experienced and proficient in the knowledge of the functions, characteristics, and proper use and care ofcommon hand and power tools such asshovels, weedeater, pushmower;proper operation of heavy and light power-driven soft and hard landscape construction equipment.Knowledge of proper safety precautions and procedures for operation of  equipment, setting  up  a job site, and performing work tasks; established policy, procedures, anddepartmental regulations relating to the maintenance, repair and construction of soft and hardlandscape.Must have experience in equipment operation and techniques used in soft and hard landscape maintenance and repairs.Must have experience with snow plowing and sanding.Must have a proven ability to be a leader, mentor, motivate and develop staff.Leadership training would be an asset.Must have a proven track record of providing excellent customer service.Must have a proven ability to communicate in a respectful and positive manner.Must have superior organizational and communication skills.Must have good interpersonal skills; tact and courtesy in discussing information ordelegating assignments to colleagues and in dealing with the generalpublic.Must have demonstrated time management and organizational skills.Must have effective verbal and written communication skills.Must be able to useMicrosoft Office andmobile communication devices.Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and be physically fit to perform the assigned tasks.A valid Class 5 (non GDL) Alberta Operators License with current drivers abstract is required.This position will not be suitable for someone with outdoor allergiesApplication Deadline: February 26, 2020We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes.
