The Town of Qualicum Beach is seeking applications for the position(s) of Labourer Trainee with the Parks Department on a temporary full-time basis for dates to be determined in the period of March – October 2021.
Turf maintenance and irrigation work
Planting and maintaining perennials and annuals
Pruning ornamental and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs
Assisting in the construction, renovation, and maintenance of various landscaped and horticultural areas
General labour duties
Set up/take down and other general labour duties for special events
Other related duties as assigned
Required qualifications include:
Grade 12 plus a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record;
A certificate in Parks Maintenance or Horticultural Program would be an asset;
Experience in all aspects of general parks labour, including the specific areas noted above;
Experience operating landscaping equipment such as hedge trimmers, string line trimmers, lawn mowers, front end loaders, tractors, skid steer, utility side-by-side vehicles, commercial wood chippers, and chain saws;
Physical capability to safely complete continuous manual labour (e.g. bending, shoveling, lifting, pushing/pulling, etc.) in all weather conditions;
Ability to use a computer including Microsoft Office applications;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, particularly when dealing with the public;
Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team as well as independently;
Focus on safety.
Note: an equivalent combination of education, experience, and knowledge will be considered if deemed acceptable by the employer.
The terms and conditions of employment are covered by the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The rate of pay will be $24.62/hour. Successful applicants will be expected to work 40 hours/week and will include weekends.
