Job Description

Reporting to the Administrative Director, the Laboratory Information System (LIS) Officer PLM works with the Department’s Senior LIS Officer to:

  • Monitor, maintain, support and troubleshoot the Laboratory Information System with a focus on Core Lab.
  • Design and test ODBC queries to the Laboratory Information System 
  • Assist the laboratory in data mining, develop reports and data analysis
  • Test LIS computer applications; use these applications for process design/redesign and to better manage workflow and workload.
  • Build and maintain LIS dictionaries
  • This posting is primarily focused on the Core Lab department but knowledge and understanding of other system modules may be required.
  • Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for routine maintenance and support of system, including on-call support during/after regular hours
  • Develop deep understanding of the different LIS modules at the configuration level and apply knowledge to improve or enhance process flow in the Genetics/Pathology laboratory
  • Assist in data extraction through SQL and ODBC
  • Prepare and process routine and problematic system documentation
  • Responsible for monitoring interfaces and troubleshooting as required
  • Develop software change requests for new interfaces and new system functionality 
  • Test and implement new software
  • Work with Help Desk staff to troubleshoot hardware problems (printers, terminals, etc.) as needed
  • Responsible for maintenance and security of data
  • Liaise with hospital informatics team on initiatives with hospital-wide implications
  • Provide maintenance of shared LIS dictionaries
  • Recommend changes to the LIS Policies and Procedures
  • Recommend changes to the LIS that will benefit the operations of the department 
  • Assist with training of laboratory staff in the use of the LIS
  • Ensures compliance with all security policies
  • Liaise with Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) interfaced clients; investing problems and initiating changes
  • Act as liaison between the Laboratory, HP and Cerner for interface and support issues
  • Job Requirements

  • Successful completion of an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science) or a related field from an accredited educational institution
  • MLT in good standing with CMLTO preferred
  • Two (2) or more years’ of experience in a medical laboratory.
  • Demonstrated computer science and technology skills
  • Min 1 year Experience in using and configuring Lab Information Systems (LIS)
  • Knowledge of laboratory processes
  • Advanced certification in MS Office Software (i.e. Excel, Access)
  • Experience and knowledge with Workload Management Systems
  • Knowledge of HL7 and ASTM communications standards
  • Familiar with project management tools and processes
  • Understand medical terminology and basic operations of clinical laboratories
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot computer systems and software
  • Demonstrated teaching ability and good interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal) with demonstrated attention to detail
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record
