ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Director of Planning and Capital Projects, the GIS Specialist provides technical and research assistance to the SN departments regarding GIS requests or legal survey requests. The incumbent is responsible for GIS data entry, updating and for designing maps for GIS projects. The position requires solid knowledge of GIS, research, writing code and project administration. This is an intermediate position whose incumbent is strong interpersonally, technically and administratively.
Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
Responsible for GIS data creation, conversion, maintenance, and accuracy, as well as ensuring data is accessible by other Squamish Nation staff as needed.
Maintains and administers Squamish Nations Enterprise Geodatabase.
Creates maps and graphical materials for presentations and departmental uses.
Performs spatial analysis, geo-processing tasks and data synthesis as needed.
Develops and maintains Squamish Nation’s internal WebGIS (ArcGIS server, Portal for ArcGIS).
Administers and maintains Squamish Nations ArcGIS (ArcGIS server, Portal for ArcGIS)
Creates custom scripts and/or tools as needed
Manages GIS software and hardware – including but not limited to installation, upgrades, and coordinating with Information Technology department.
Adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
Contributes cooperatively to the Squamish Nation Planning and Capital Projects team to achieve position and department goals
Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:
GIS Diploma/Degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution.
2 – 3 years of directly-related experience in the majority of specialties listed in job description or an equivalent of education and experience.
As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to first nation policies, mapping and surveying and GIS .
Working knowledge and experience in ArcGIS Enterprise including ArcGIS server and portal, and ArcGIS Online.
Conceptual understanding and basic working knowledge of AutoCAD and FME.
Familiarity with Provincial and Federal Data warehouses and GIS data formats.
Experience working in a First Nations environment is preferred.
Must have valid BC Driver’s License, Class 4 or 5. Class 7N may be considered.
Must have access to a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance that meets company policy.
Must successfully complete Criminal Records Check as per Squamish Nation Policy
