Position Summary:

Trulioo is looking for a well-rounded General Counsel to join its team. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this is a robust role that works closely with the executive, sales, compliance, and business operations teams. You will be hands-on, leading a small team with a broad portfolio of responsibilities, including commercial agreement negotiations across a global customer base, understanding international data privacy standards, and managing corporate governance activities for one of Vancouver’s fastest growing technology companies.

We innovate in the exciting and impactful online identity space. The ideal candidate will be passionate about driving inclusion at the intersection of technology, the regulatory environment, and our digital economy. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility and accountability for legal department, including general corporate matters, transaction support, contract management, employment law, regulatory matters, risk management, and financing activities
  • Reinforce a positive and efficient working and communications style inter-departmentally
  • Draft, review, and negotiate wide variety of commercial agreements including End-User and Master Services License Agreements, Data Privacy Addendums, and Subcontractor/Partner Agreements, with domestic and international clients, partners, and vendors
  • Provide subject matter expertise regarding laws and guidelines specific to Trulioo’s industry, including researching and reporting on data privacy and protection changes, the global KYC/AML compliance regulatory landscape, and other relevant legal developments impacting the identity verification space
  • Work with outside counsels on key initiatives, corporate structure considerations, internal policy decisions, and other business objectives
  • Develop functional plans and tools for managing legal matters, including activities to be performed in-house or through third-parties, to efficiently manage the company’s legal activities and minimize risk for the business
  • Manage a small team, including identifying and communicating roles and responsibilities, setting goals and priorities, and carrying out performance reviews

Key/Technical Skills:

  • A strong interest and willingness to become proficient in regulatory affairs, specifically around data privacy and protection legislation, GDPR, CCPA, and other similarly applicable law
  • Previous demonstrable experience managing a team
  • Proficiency in hands-on commercial agreement negotiation
  • Ability to fulfill corporate governance responsibilities
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Business acumen, sound judgment, and solid negotiation skills
  • Flexible and adaptable mindset and working style

Education and Experience:

  • Law degree and member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia
  • 10 years of relevant experience, with at least 3 years being in-house
