Job Description:

Candidates must be able to obtain RCMP Reliability Status Clearance for this position. This requires that you have resided continuously in Canada for the last 5+ years.

The Corporate Applications Services IT team seeks a Director-level Technical Lead to build and run the SAP Centre of Excellence. This is a technical role requiring extensive experience implementing SAP FI / GL solutions for corporate Finance business partners and integrating them with other applications and processes. The SAP CoE is aligned to Corporate IT, reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Application Development Operations. The role requires partnership with key stakeholders (e.g. Operations, IT Architects, IT PMO, business users) and external vendors.

As the lead for the SAP CoE:

  • You will be the focal point for the activities roadmap related to SAP; and the owner of all SAP knowledge
  • Define and drive the vision and strategy for SAP while driving value from this investment
  • Strong working knowledge of, as well as guidance and maintenance over SAP Contracts and Licenses
  • Establish the governance of SAP related topics across the organization – Business and IT, as well as Global and Regional
  • Achieve the supportability of SAP Products and Solutions and the interface to SAP Support
  • Achieve Business Continuity and Continuous Improvement of implementation, innovation, operation and quality of business processes and system related to the SAP software solutions
  • Drive requirements and activities regarding SAP’s current and future technologies, products and solutions – the interface to SAP’s major programs influencing SAP development
  • Define and Drive together with the lines of business the innovation roadmap with a Continuous Innovation approach.
  • In the role of introducing new solutions, you will work with business analysts, business partners and account management to understand business requirements. You will lead the design of SAP solutions that meet business needs. You will collaborate with architects to determine the high level solution and ensure architectural alignment. You will support and coach both onshore and offshore developers as they build the solutions. You will also work closely with other SLF teams (e.g. data architects, business intelligence/reporting, server management, web hosting, etc.) as they deliver their components of the solutions.

    Within the technical lead component of the role, you will be accountable for the technical solution, and provide technical leadership, along with governance and issue resolution. You will ensure our solutions meet SLF’s security and compliance standards, follow our best practices and general computing controls, and align with the expected architecture. You will collaborate closely with project managers, and the other project leads to ensure successful delivery, and be forward-looking to identify and resolve issues while balancing the short-term project needs with the long-term account objectives.

    In the leadership role, you will hire, coach and develop the required talent, whether as a direct report or indirect.

    This role requires a confident, driven and adaptable individual with strong leadership, communication and integration skills, who instinctively owns delivery and drives projects and enhancements to successful completion. 

    Main accountabilities:

  • IT ownership of all SAP technical components; and jointly with Account Management, the business relationships.
  • Provide technical leadership within projects ensuring the appropriate technical solution is being delivered, appropriate governance is applied, risks are mitigated, issues are resolved and projects are successfully implemented.
  • Provide estimates and contribute to defining timelines and project plans
  • Work with onshore and offshore development teams as required to ensure successful delivery.
  • Provide Level 2 support to our operations team as needed with problem analysis, resolution, escalation and reporting
  • Transition projects and enhancements to our operations team
  • Stay current with trends in emerging technologies, specifically with SAP technologies, and how they could apply to Sun Life
  • Partner with architects and account management to ensure solutions follow our technology roadmaps and business strategies
  • Collaborate closely with our internal teams (e.g. data architects, business to business, business intelligence/reporting, server management, etc.) as they deliver their components of your solutions
  • Work with external software vendors during vendor implementations, renewal activities and issue resolution

  • Qualifications/Skills:

  • 8+ years of experience designing and delivering solutions involving SAP technologies and/or other leading industry Finance / General Ledger (GL) software.
  • 1-2+ years team leadership/management and SAP technical leadership
  • 1-2+ years experience with SAP S4 Hana
  • 5+ years experience with ABAP (and the ABAP Workbench)
  • 5+ years experience with RICEFW (aka WRICEF) objects in SAP
  • 2+ years experience in design and development of SAP FIORI technologies.
  • 2+ years vendor management primarily in a SaaS model
  • Excellent understanding of distributed application architectures and cloud models.
  • Experience working with application vendors and building solutions involving integrating vendor applications into existing environment.
  • Experience with creating effective design documentation and diagrams
  • Expertise in system integration, job flows relative to data integration
  • Working experience with Business Warehouse (BW) and SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) is preferred, while applicants who would like to learn this technology are still encouraged to apply.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server platform and Active Directory in a distributed environment
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases (Oracle, MS SQL Server) in a distributed environment
  • Knowledge/experience with scripting languages (e.g. Windows scripting, Powershell)
  • Experience with APIs, and XML messaging
  • Experience with SDLC methodologies: Agile, Waterfall
  • Other relevant assets:

  • Experience in the full SAP suite, for example Ariba.
  • Experience with SAP NetWeaver
  • Experience with one of Java, C, C++ and Python
  • Experience with DevOps Tools (Git, BitBucket, Gradle, Jenkins)
