We continue to remain at the forefront of the testing services industry, building an enviable reputation.Location: ALS Environmental, BurnabyReports to: Metals Prep & Hg SupervisorPosition Type: Full-TimeClassification: AN2About the Position: This role is responsible for maintaining turnaround, allocating resources, quality control and leading personnel in the Trace Metals Prep team.Specific Responsibilities:Workloads and TurnaroundDay-to-day coordination of team personnel and resources to maximize production, quality and efficiency; Work-scheduling and day-to-day planning of activities within the team;Preparing “due lists” for Client Services and/or Supervisor, taking part in project mobilizations for team services;Ensuring processing of work in a timely fashion so that team sections can meet client turnaround times, and holding time requirements;Performing procedures, tests or work within the team;Responsibilities include;Metals water & seawater sample prep (digestion, filtration, etc.);Tissue sample prep (dissections, homogenizations, digestions, extractions, etc.);Dustfall sample preparation;Oversight of tissue sample storage, archive & disposal;Non-routine metals sample prep as required;Communicating with Client Services and team staff regarding specific client needs;Informing supervisor of any issues related to production, quality and efficiency within the team;Coordinates the use of resources and facility areas used by the team section including:Continual assessment of needs;Ordering of non-stock supplies; Providing necessary information for capital justifications;Ensuring all equipment maintenance and calibration are properly conducted and documented;Addressing day-to-day technical issues related to production and operation;Notifying supervisor or technical support of any issues related to facility, equipment and supplies;Coordination of sharing of equipment, space, and materials with other teams;Ensures the quality of all work performed in the laboratory, including:Analytical results;Ensuring that all required record-keeping & documentation are carried out within the team;Ensuring all tasks and procedures are carried out as specified in the documented methods and/or procedures;Ensuring methodologies and accreditation requirements are met and documented;Suggesting appropriate analytical techniques for non-routine sample types;Investigation of any missing or suspect team data or information, including rechecks and CARs; Providing input on current team methods and procedures for writing and review;Leading of personnel, including:Bringing staff concerns to the attention of management;Providing feedback and assistance to the Supervisor on all aspects of team members’ performance for evaluations, rewards, and issue resolution;Identifying training needs of team members – coordinating and/or performing said training;Promoting safety awareness and practices;Identifying staffing needs of the team;Assisting in the selection and orientation of new staff;Coordinating short-term staff sharing between teams or departments when needed;OtherLeading and suggesting positive change in the operations of the team and department;Playing an active role in promoting and clarifying company policies, procedure, etc.;Sets an example of professional behaviour for team members;Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality; Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures; Other duties as assigned.Physical Demands:Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;Ability to stand for a full shift;Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;You may be exposed to unpleasant odours.About You:The ideal candidate would have:B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Biology or Chemistry is required;One to two years laboratory experience required, trace metals experience preferred.
