This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.The position of Laboratory Analyst for the Alberta Centre for Toxicology (ACFT) reports to the Laboratory Manager, and with accountabilities from both the Manager and the Director.Workload varies by number of samples received and by number of AADAC samples that test positive in a drug category.  Chemical Analysts are responsible for basic daily/weekly/monthly routine instrumentation maintenance, method/instrument trouble shooting, and instrument supplies (the more difficult maintenance and repair is performed by more senior staff or the vendor’s service representative. Work requires possible exposure to dangerous materials and/or situations and is conducted in an area with constant background noise from instruments and gas tanks pressure relief valves. The biological samples used by this position places the laboratory in the Biohazard Level 2 which requires University of Calgary hazard training.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities(job functions include but are not limited to):Perform water quality testing which is reported to Public Health InspectorsRecommend, implement and validae new procedures or making improvements to existing procedures and maintaining established programs and proceduresMay be trained to perform other testing (drug confirmations and other procedures)Daily tasks include warming up, calibrating and running QCs on instruments: Dimension Xpand/Olympus 400AU immuno assay analyzer, PC Titrator, Metrohm Ion Chromatographs, HP Gas Chromatographs and Liquid Chromatography Mass SpectroscopyOrder and maintain stock supplies for instrumentsPerform routine maintenance on instrumentsInitial screening of biological samples is time dependent and affects the workload of confirmation chemist and certifying scientist. Confirmation tests can be completed within three days of the preliminary reportsAnalysts are trained to perform a range of proceduresWater samples can be time dependent from when they are pouredChemical Analyst may also take on temporary projects like Passive Air Monitoring where analyst will prepare sample collection devices, ship to the area conducting the test, receive and inspect the used collection devices, and analyze for compounds of interest. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) is a similar projectProjects may be computer based like data tabulation of old results, researching online for a topic of interest for laboratory growthDocumentation is a critical laboratory function. Proper use of internal chain of custody, Quality control charts, maintenance logs, verification logs, and preparation logsChemical analysts prepare internal quality controls and calibrators for verification before useQualifications / Requirements:Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, analytical or related field1 years’ experience in analytical chemistry and instrumentation (university program may be considered as part or all of the 1 year experience required)Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Certificate (WHMIS)Biohazard Level 2Proficiency in Microsoft Office programsAbility to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an efficient and effective mannerRequires strong organizational and time management skills, accuracy, and strong attention to detailApplication Deadline: October 29, 2018We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes.
