Intermediate Fisheries Biologist

Hatfield Consultants is seeking an experienced Fisheries Biologist to become part of our dynamic Environmental Monitoring and Assessment team in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The ideal candidate will provide field, technical and project management support for the design and implementation of projects related to fish and fish habitat and aquatic monitoring in the oil sands region of Alberta.
Location:
Fort McMurray, AB – This is a full-time permanent position. All of our staff reside in Fort McMurray. This is not a fly-in, fly-out position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Organizing and implementing fisheries and aquatic biology assessments and environmental monitoring programs, including study design, data analysis and reporting.
Participation in field programs to conduct and direct technical aspects of environmental monitoring and assessments of aquatic habitats.
Coordinating and supervising environmental technicians responsible for conducting baseline studies and ongoing monitoring programs.
Assisting with the design and implementation of monitoring programs that focus on fish populations and communities, fish habitat and fish health.
Compilation and analysis of environmental data and report writing.
Preparing reports on researched results and presenting recommendations.
Ensuring compliance of project activities with all relevant provincial and federal environmental regulations.
Competencies:
Demonstrated technical competency and knowledge of freshwater fish and fish habitat.
Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
Ability/interest to work extensively in the field in a range of weather conditions, occasionally in remote locations.
Have demonstrated project management skills.
Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation and analysis).
Problem solving skills (analyze a case or situation and recommending solution(s)).
Have excellent communication (verbal and written – technical or scientific writing).
Education and/or Experience:
B.Sc. or higher degree in biology or environmental science, with emphasis on fisheries and aquatic ecology.
3 – 5 years of relevant work experience in biology/fisheries science.
Experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
Ability/interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
Being familiar with the Alberta and Federal regulatory environments for construction projects would be an asset.
Up-to-date First Aid certification and a current Driver’s License.
