Hatfield Consultants, a Canadian environmental consulting company that has undertaken over 4,000 projects in North and South America, Asia, Europe and Africa requires a permanent full-time Environmental Technician for its Fort McMurray office. Environmental technicians will participate in programs that include environmental planning, monitoring and assessment of construction projects. This will consist of serving as field crew members for projects and studies requiring: water quality sampling, fisheries and aquatic habitat assessments, nesting bird surveys; other environmental projects as assigned; entering and analyzing data; and assisting with the writing of reports. While most project work will be Fort McMurray based, environmental technicians can expect occasional long hours of field work at remote locations throughout northern Alberta. Hatfield provides competitive reimbursement for overtime hours.
Infrastructure and Environmental Management Group – Fort McMurray, AB
– This is a full-time permanent position. All of our staff reside in Fort McMurray. This is not a fly-in, fly-out position.
General Description:
Hatfield Consultants is seeking a qualified Environmental Technician to assist with the environmental management of infrastructure projects in Alberta. Primary duties will consist of: (i) assisting the with the development and implementation of environmental management plans (EMPs) for infrastructure projects, including all required monitoring, reporting, and quality management; and (ii) assisting with environmental permitting, licensing, and preparation of EMPs and related environmental compliance documents. The position will be based out of Hatfield’s Fort McMurray office.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Implement required field activities including construction monitoring and baseline surveys in support of project design and implementation.
Assist the supervision of teams of environmental technicians responsible for environmental management and monitoring on a range of infrastructure projects.
Assist with managing all aspects of project implementation, including resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, quality management, and day-to-day client liaison.
Provide technical assistance for acquiring environmental permits, licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies in support of infrastructure projects.
Provide technical assistance in the preparation of a range of environmental compliance documents required for project approval and implementation, such as EMPs, environmental protection plans, and environmental work plans.
Work with project development teams – including proponents, regulators, designers, and construction personnel – to address environmental management and protection measures during project planning and implementation.
Competencies:
Excellent problem-solving skills to ensure project compliance through creative solutions within an active construction work environment.
Experience working on construction environmental monitoring projects and specific training and experience dealing with erosion and sedimentation issues is an asset.
Understanding of pertinent environmental legislation, regulations, and guidance documents to ensure and/or enforce project-specific compliance.
Excellent communication (verbal and technical writing) skills.
Education and Experience:
Technical diploma, B.Sc., or equivalent with appropriate qualifications for work in Alberta.
Experience interpreting and working with federal and provincial environmental regulatory and permitting requirements associated with infrastructure development projects.
Experience working with a range of environmental disciplines (surface and groundwater quality, soils, vegetation, fish and fish habitat, contaminated sites, air quality, noise, archaeology, First Nations, etc.) is an asset.
CPESC (Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control) certification or equivalent is an asset.
Experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
Ability/interest to work in the field.
