The successful candidate will live and breathe news with a particular interest in local people and issues and be both knowledgeable and passionate about upholding the principles of ethical journalism in the information age.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIESGenerate fresh and interesting story ideas with a digital-first perspectiveWrite tight news stories and community features to be showcased in print and on multimedia platformsMaintain a strong social media presence to build personal brand and mine for unique story leadsExperience with diverse range of content from hard news to food and events reportingEmploy data journalism as a means of telling stories in an impactful wayExplore alternate story forms, online and in print, for maximized reader engagementPost content to website and social media on daily basisTake quality photographs and adjust for publicationMust be well-versed in Canadian Libel Law and Canadian Press StyleOther duties as assignedWHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORDegree or Diploma in JournalismMust have exceptional writing and reporting skillsA motivated self-starter who is an innovative and energetic journalist with the ability to write clean copy and take photosHave experience working in a newsroom environment and be able to adhere to tight deadlinesHave strong interview and communication skills, with the ability to establish strong community relationshipsProven news judgment and a strong work ethicPossess strong skills in online journalism, including social mediaExperience with SEO headline writing and the ability to write an engaging social media postEffective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriatelyAbility to shoot and edit photographsMust be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekendMust have access to a vehicle and a valid Driver’s LicenceApplication must include cover letter, resume and link to online portfolio.
