Develops preliminary and detailed layouts of complex to very complex (PWBs) Printed Wiring Boards. Provides technical assistance to more junior personnel.Assumes prime responsibility for the electronic layout design aspects of assigned product development or design projects.Responsible for the development of electro-mechanical design solutions which meet the specific design requirements including: Design to Cost; Design for Manufacturability and Product intent.Responsible for interpreting the System and Product design layout requirements, understanding their impact on product development and developing innovative and optimized product layout design solutions.Good understanding of the principles of Shock & Vibration, Thermal Management, Signal Integrity and Electro-Magnetic Interference & Electro-Magnetic Compliance Management and how these environmental requirements are accommodated in product layout design.Good understanding of Design to Cost principles through their repeated and successful application in ensuring early establishment of realistic product/system cost objectives and then managing the key factors which influence design cost to meet the stated objectives.Very good understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly principles through their repeated and successful application in producing cost effective, electronic designs which are optimized for contract manufacturing.Very good ability to create working-quality technical drawings in accordance with accepted industry drafting standards.Good ability to analyze/interpret mechanical technical drawings by reading and understanding part tolerances, standard industry symbols and drawing conventions to a level where the information provided is sufficient to construct the part, or assembly.Very good understanding of Materials properties (copper, glass (fr4), resin & composites) and Fabrication processes (plating, lamination, drilling, & material finishes); demonstrates the ability to select appropriate materials in developing cost effective, optimized product and layout designs.Conducts thorough research to prepare high quality written reports of both technical and non-technical ideas.Excellent working knowledge of CAD and documentation tools; possessing excellent 3D CAD modeling skills and is very well versed in stackup creations and selection.Excellent knowledge and understanding of the company Engineering Processes and is responsible for their successful application during the appropriate phases of the product development life cycle as it pertains to PWB design layout.Good understanding of Project Management principles and Performance Measurements and their application and value on specific projects.Support the Team Lead in the following areas: Budget development; Schedule development; Produce Monthly progress reports (% complete, ETC, scheduling updates and out of scope tasks); support the development of Estimates; Identification and resolution of potential project risks related to budget, schedule, product cost and technical.Basic knowledge of System Engineering fundamental principles and their application in electro-mechanical product development.Very good understanding of Configuration/Change Management principles and their application in the product development life cycle.Ensures necessary change documents are initiated and actioned to ensure design integrity and configuration control.Good understanding and ability to manage/lead the work product reviews/walkthroughs (IDR, PDR, CDR, etc.) process for design validation throughout the planning, development and maintenance stages of product /system development cycle.Possesses good presentation skills to clearly convey technical and non-technical data to enable comprehensive evaluations and critiquing of the design.Demonstrates the ability to design and conduct a variety of test vehicles for trials and risk reduction of layout designs to ensure their compliance to product design specifications.Very good working knowledge of Engineering/Industry (IPC)/Military Standards for product/device performance & specifications. Possesses a good understanding of how these regulated performance requirements impact system/unit design.As a company representative you work closely with customers and vendors to ensure that an optimum design solution is achieved by: Identifying and addressing issues encountered related to in-house and COTS designs.Keeps abreast of current and emerging technologies related to electronic design packaging and manufacturing. Makes recommendations for and oversees R&D projects aimed at introducing these new technologies into the company.Assists in the preparation and revision of company standards, procedures, department and work instructions in line with current requirements.Reports on key quality and output data relevant to the team; accepts personal accountability to the team, and to internal and external customers.Performs other related duties.Equivalent to an Ontario Secondary school graduation plus a further 3 years of formal education in relevant courses of which 1 year in Electro Mechanical Drafting or Technology.Over 10 years of experience of which at least 5 years involve operation of the Mentor Graphics, Valor and Polar tool suites.PhysicalSits extensively in work station, periodically getting up to go to meetings, see internal customers, etc. Continuous hand/finger movement for mousing.
