Responsibilities/Duties: The Department of Pediatrics invites applications for the clinical position of Child Abuse Physician (0.2 full time equivalent) at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The successful candidate will become a member of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Child Abuse Service, which is expanding to four (4) part-time physicians. The Service is part of the Department of Pediatrics, Child Development Services and is located in the newly opened Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre (SKCAC). The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team, including the Calgary Police Service, Child and Family Services and the Alberta Health Services Child Abuse Service (including a nurse clinician, dedicated social worker and therapists), who are co-located in the SKCAC. The physician’s role will be to provide assessments and consultations for children with suspected inflicted physical injuries, sexual abuse and neglect. Responsibilities will include scheduled clinics, on call consultations and triage meetings with SKCAC staff. The physician will share call duties with the other physicians. The child abuse physicians are also expected to participate in regular case review rounds, diagnostic imaging rounds and peer review with the Edmonton Child Abuse Service. Responsibilities will also include offering opinions to other agencies such as Alberta Child and Family Services, the Police, the Crown Prosecutor’s Office and the Alberta Courts at all levels, therefore when requested, Court Testimony is expected. Participation in teaching at all levels (UME, PGME, CME, other professionals) is expected. Opportunities are available for research, and program development. The SKCAC opened in March 2013. The mandate of the Centre is to provide comprehensive services for child abuse victims from Calgary and surrounding areas, up to the age of 18 years. The hospital provides patient care to Southern Alberta, SE British Columbia and SW Saskatchewan, a catchment area of approximately 2.5 million people. Calgary is served by two level 3 NICUs and four level 2 NICUs and includes four teaching hospitals situated in the City of Calgary. The Department of Pediatrics has more than 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary.
