VGH is home to many specialty services including the provincial burn centre as well as quaternary emergency services including: spinal, neurosurgery and severe trauma. VGH is also a major teaching hospital, affiliated with The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Medicine, and home to one of the largest research institutes in Canada. The UBC Faculty of Medicine is consistently ranked as one the best schools in Canada and in the World.The RoleWith this in mind, the Anesthesiology Department at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is now looking for up to eight Anesthesiologists. With 60 members, the Vancouver Acute (VA) Anesthesia Department is one of the largest departments in Western Canada and provides all the anesthesia care at VA’s two acute care hospitals, VGH and UBCH.Our anesthesiologists are involved with all the phases of the perioperative care of our patients. In addition to providing operating room care for over 32,000 patients per year, our members see 10,000 patients per year in the Anesthesia Consult Clinic and provide acute pain management following surgery for over 3000 patients per year. Our department is also actively involved in the provision of care in the ICU where three members of the department hold cross appointments in Critical Care and our Division of Cardiac Anesthesia also manages the 700 cardiac surgical patients in the 10 bed Cardiac Surgery ICU.With the addition of 16 brand new OR’s to the hospital currently under development, there is the anticipation of an increase in demand for anesthesia services.
